Newly-signed Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien has discussed his main target after making his debut for his new side.

The Bafana Bafana left-back made the switch to the Brazilians in this transfer window, reuniting with his former teammates Jayden Adams and Iqraam Rayners, who moved to Masandawana last season.

Basadien played his first match for The Tshwane giants in their dominant 4-0 MTN8 quarter-final win against Richards Bay FC on Sunday evening at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Although the left-back only played 13 minutes in the second-half and was used out of position at right-back—replacing Zuko Mdunyelwa.

Speaking after his debut, Basadien revealed his main target is to become a regular at left-back in Sundowns colours. However, he will have to earn his place as he competes with established players like Aubrey Modiba, as well as Divine Lunga, Terrence Mashego, and Asekho Tiwani.

“For me, the target here is to play regularly, help the team obviously to achieve more,” said Basadien. “I want to win more trophies, but my main thing is to just help the team. By helping the team, I mean maybe getting clean-sheets, trying to reach the team’s objectives and hopefully win titles as well.”

The 28-year-old further expressed his delight at having made his first appearance in front of the ‘Yellow Nation’ over the past weekend.

“I was looking forward to playing in front of them [Sundowns supporters]. They made me feel welcomed,” Basadien added.

“I just enjoy the honour of playing for the team with such great supporters. I just want to thank them for coming out. We appreciate it.”

Sundowns will open their Betway Premiership campaign with an away clash against Chippa United. The match will take place on Saturday, 9 August at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium [15:00].
