Mamelodi Sundowns secure first league win of the season

Mamelodi Sundowns up against AmaZulu FC

Betway Premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns secured their first win of the season in the league after defeating AmaZulu FC 2-0 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Iqraam Rayners scored early in the second half while Tashreeq Matthews netted the second during the referee’s optional time.

The home side made a few changes to the side that played to a 1-1 draw against Chippa United in their opening Betway Premiership match of the new season on Saturday.

Mosa Lebusa, Jayden Adams, Aubrey Modiba, Fawaaz Basadien and Tashreeq Matthews were all dropped to the bench.

Both sides created some decent chances in the first half but failed to make anything out of them. Usuthu forward Tebogo Mashigo came close to opening the scoring for the visitors in the 22nd minute. But he missed the opportunity after being one-on-one with Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Kutlwano Letlhaku is another player who had two opportunities for Sundowns before the half-time break to break the deadlock. But the SA junior international was unfortunate as both his attempts missed the target.

The two teams went into the half-time break with the score at 0-0. But it didn’t take long for the home side to find the opening goal.

Striker Iqraam Rayners netted his first goal of the season with a cool finish after an assist from Tashreeq Matthews. It is the first win of the season for the reigning champions in the league after a draw against Chippa United in their previous match.
