After weeks of speculation surrounding his future, Mamelodi Sundowns have made a decision regarding Thembinkosi Lorch, and a return to North Africa appears to be on the cards.

Lorch, who enjoyed a successful loan stint last season with Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca, did not report to Sundowns for pre-season training and the start of the new campaign, fueling speculation that his time at the club was in jeopardy.

The attacker is also reportedly not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso’s long-term plans. The 32-year-old initially joined Sundowns in January 2024 after leaving Orlando Pirates. At the Tshwane giants he reunited with coach Rulani Mokwena before again joining him at Wydad earlier this year.

Despite Mokwena’s subsequent departure from the Moroccan club, Lorch remained a key player and a fan favourite due to several standout performances.

With persistent interest from Wydad AC, Sundowns confirmed on Thursday night that Lorch will not be returning to the club. Reports indicate he is on the verge of making a return to Wydad. Although the Moroccan club initially took some time to finalise a buyout after his short-term loan ended, an agreement has reportedly been reached, paving the way for Lorch to rejoin The Red Castle.

The move was widely anticipated after the 32-year-old’s impressive loan spell in Morocco. He featured in the Botola Pro League, where he scored two goals and later at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Bafana Bafana international played in all of Wydad’s Club World Cup matches in the USA, including fixtures against Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain, and scored one goal during the tournament.

In a statement on their social media channels, Sundowns expressed their gratitude to Lorch for his contributions.

“THANK YOU, NYOSO. After two unforgettable years, one league title, 26 appearances, seven goals, and four assists, the Yellow Nation thanks and celebrates Thembinkosi Lorch,” the club said. “Wishing you all the best as you begin the next chapter of your journey.”
