Knowledge Musona’s arrival raises stakes for Zim player salaries

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona leaped to become the highest-paid player following his return to Zimbabwe’s PSL.

Musona joined Scottland FC of Zimbabwe last month as a free agent after being released by Saudi Arabian club Al-Okhdood.

He became the latest ex-Betway Premiership star to join Scottland FC, a team that has assembled the most fiery squad in the Zimbabwe elite league.

Khama Billiat, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Walter Musona, Khuda Muyaba and Ronald Pfumbidzai are some of the notable names at the Harare-based side.

Among all the stars, it has emerged that Knowledge Musona became the highest-paid player at the club and in the country, followed by Khama Billiat.

While many details of his contract at Scottland FC have been concealed, FARPost understands Musona leapfrogged Billiat, who was the highest earner.

HOW MUCH KNOWLEDGE MUSONA EARNS

The former Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns talisman, Billiat, is earning US$6000, which is equivalent to R105 000 per month.

But the arrival of Musona has changed the highest earners list. FARPost understands The Smiling Assassin pockets around R140 000 [US$8000] per month, excluding winning and draw bonuses.

So far, Musona has played in three matches but with no goals or assists to his name. However, it goes without a doubt that his presence in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has raised the stakes in terms of player salaries.

In the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League, footballers’ salaries differ greatly depending on the clubs. Entry-level players earn around US$400 [R7000] per month, excluding bonuses. However, top players who include Billiat and Musona are earning better following their return to Zimbabwe.

Some of the highest earners include Walter Musona, who is also at Scottland FC. Goalkeeper Wallace Magalane of FC Platinum, Dynamos defender Emmanuel Jalai and Frank Makarati of TelOne FC are also top earners.

Former SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates winger Kuda Mahachi is the highest at his club, Manica Diamonds. In addition, coaches also have a wide range of salaries, with some earning much more than others.
