Ex-Polokwane City forward to set take career to Europe

Forward, Douglas Mapfumo in Polokwane City colors

Ex-Polokwane City FC and Cape Town City FC forward Douglas Mapfumo is set to take his career to Europe, FARPost has learnt.

Mapfumo is currently unattached since leaving Polokwane City FC at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The 25-year-old was initially linked with Scottland FC, a team that houses the likes of Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona and Walter Musona in the Zimbabwean top-flight.

However nothing materialised after a series of talks between the club and the player’s management. Infact, Mapfumo turned down their offer.

He will be hoping to make the move in time for him to impress the Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees ahead of the 2025 AFCON to be staged in Morocco later this year.

Mapfumo is a product of Zimbabwe’s Legends Academy and has been one of the most underrated strikers in the country. Last season, Mapfumo had limited game time in the PSL at PLK City,

Mapfumo is a highly-skilled and physically imposing striker. Plausibly, he possesses a unique combination of strength, pace and aerial ability making him a formidable opponent for defenders. But he was restricted to three appearances during the 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign.

Mapfumo was lured to join Polokwane City in July 2023 from Black Leopards. His contract details were not revealed but Polokwane City gave him a platform to be recognised back in Zimbabwe.

His performances at Polokwane City FC helped he earn call-ups to the Zimbabwe national team during 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He also featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He made four starts for Zimbabwe, with three appearances from the bench.

Meanwhile at Polokwane City FC, he made a total of 35 appearances across all competitions. And he managed to score five goals while providing two assists. Mapfumo also played for Cape Umoya and Cape Town City FC.
