Morgan Gould shares thoughts on Aden McCarthy’s rise

Aden McCarthy in Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould has shared his thoughts on the rise of Aden McCarthy in the new Betway Premiership season.

The young defender has had a flying start to the 2025/26 season after bagging back-to-back Man-of-the-Match awards in the two opening Betway Premiership matches for Amakhosi.

McCarthy displayed a solid performance in the centre-back position in the first match of the campaign against Stellenbosch FC.

In that encounter, Chiefs claimed a convincing 2-0 victory over the Winelands-based side with goals from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Glody Lilepo. On Wednesday night, the Bafana Bafana international was once again crucial when Amakhosi defeated Polokwane City FC 1-0.

The Glamour Boys moved to the second position on the log standings with six points after having a perfect start to the season.

McCarthy has formed a formidable combination with Inacio Miguel at the heart of defence as Chiefs are yet to concede in the new season.

The 21-year-old gained promotion to the Chiefs’ senior team after impressing in the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side. McCarthy was pivotal last season when the Soweto giants won the title in the DDC.

Morgan Gould has heaped praises on the promising defender, revealing that the starlet is the epitome of patience.

“Aden McCarthy is the epitome of patience; delay is not denial. He has been patient and waiting for his opportunity,” Gould told FARPost.

“He’s yet to unleash the Aden that we’ll all love watching, and I just give his parents credit because he comes from a footballing background and was born out of Chiefs.

“Everyone in the family stuck with him when people were saying Aden must go, and the patience is paying off. He is a player of note; not only is he the son of Fabian McCarthy, but he is a great player in his own right.

“I’m impressed with how he’s taking the pressure of playing for Kaizer Chiefs; all eyes are on him, but he’s a humble human being.”
