‘Sometimes I do bad things’ – says ex-Chiefs DDC star

Stellenbosch FC left-back Omega Mdaka

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] star Omega Mdaka has reflected on his start to the 2025/26 PSL season in Stellenbosch FC colours.

The 21-year-old walked away with the Man of the Match accolade in their MTN8 first-leg semi-final tie against Sekhukhune United at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday night.

Stellies secured a 2-0 victory over Babina Noko in the first-leg, thanks to goals by Enyinnaya Godswill and Devin Titus.

Mdaka has featured in all four games played by the Steve Barker-coached side this season. He plays as a left-back, a position that was previously held by Bafana Bafana international Fawaaz Basadien, who has since joined the Betway Premiership defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Despite a costly mistake, Mdaka’s consistent performances have earned him high praise from his mentor, Barker. The coach has lauded him as one of the top performers on the team, even after he gave away a last-minute penalty against his former club, Chiefs, a moment that left him distraught.

WHAT OMEGA MDAKA SAID AFTER RECEIVING MTN8 MAN OF THE MATCH

Mdaka acknowledged his good start to the season but admitted to making some poor decisions that have cost his team. He has vowed to learn from his mistakes and improve with every game.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Almighty God and the technical team for this opportunity and for believing in me,” Mdaka told SuperSport TV after winning the MTN8 R8 000 Man of the Match prize.

“It’s been a great start for me so far. Sometimes I do bad things that cost the team, but I improve every game.

“You know, I just try my best to improve. It starts at training, and the guys keep motivating me to do better at training so that when it’s matchday, it is easier for me to make passes and defend well.”

Stellenbosch will now shift their focus to the Betway Premiership game against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, 20 August at Orlando Stadium. The match will start at 19:30.
