Velebayi breaks his silence on joining Kaizer Chiefs

latest acquisition, Asenele Velebayi for Kaizer Chiefs with Kaizer Jr Motaung

In a moment of pure joy, Asenele Velebayi has broken his silence on his move to Kaizer Chiefs, revealing the very first thing he did after signing on the dotted line to officially become a Glamour Boy.

Velebayi’s dream of wearing the famous gold and black jersey has been a long time coming. The 22-year-old, who has been on Amakhosi’s radar for over a year, penned a long-term deal with the club last Tuesday.

However, the move comes with a touch of drama. His former club, Cape Town Spurs, filed a review application with the SAFA Arbitration Tribunal most recently. This follows a PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber ruling that Velebayi was a free agent after CT Spurs were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the amateur ranks. The club is challenging the decision, arguing it is not legally sustainable.

This legal battle means Velebayi will have to wait a little longer before he can make his much-anticipated debut in Chiefs colours. Despite the uncertainty, the attacker’s excitement is undeniable.

VELEBAYI ON CHIEFS MOVE: ‘I CAN’T EVEN DESCRIBE THE FEELING’

“I’m a young man from Cape Town, originally from the Eastern Cape,” he said. “I can’t even describe the feeling. When I heard the news that I was officially joining Kaizer Chiefs, the first thing I did was call my mother and family to share the good news. I was so happy. It has always been my dream to come here, and I aim to make the most of this amazing opportunity.”

After spending most of his life in the Western Cape, Velebayi, a versatile and pacy talent, is relishing the new challenge of moving north in Naturena.

“I can play on the right, and as a number 10 as well, but my favoured position is wide on the left as a winger,” declared Velebayi, stating that he is fully committed to playing any role that coach Nasreddine Nabi needs him to.

Meanwhile, Velebayi also had a message for the Amakhosi faithful. “I want to thank the supporters for the warm welcome I have received. I really hope we all have a wonderful season together.”
