Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has reacted to striker Peter Shalulile’s record-equalling 129th PSL goal against Magesi FC at a packed Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday night.

The Namibian striker equalled Siyabonga Nomvethe’s record as all-time top scorer in the PSL era after scoring during the 2-0 win over Magesi in a Betway Premiership match.

The 31-year-old hitman has now scored 102 goals at Sundowns and 27 at Highlands Park in over 250 matches across all competitions in the PSL.

And the Magesi encounter was the first start for Shalulile in the new 2025/26 season, as he had been linked with a move to Esperance in Tunisia in recent weeks.

MIGUEL CARDOSO PROUD OF PETER SHALULILE’S LATEST MILESTONE

“Obviously, when players achieve their own objectives and mark history, we as a team helped them to achieve those achievements; we all feel proud and happy,” Cardoso told journalists. “As you saw, I also went to congratulate him and gave him a hug. It’s important that Peter helps us to win matches.

“Basically, he and his teammates did a wonderful job today [Wednesday]. It was very resilient because it was a very difficult match. We had to start taking it from the beginning. But we knew that it would probably be closer to the second-half after we had two chances to finish the game.”

CARDOSO PLEASED WITH YOUNG PLAYERS’ PROGRESS AT SUNDOWNS

Meanwhile, Cardoso started the match against Magesi with the likes of SA Under-20 international Gomolemo Kekana, Kutlwano Letlhaku and Siyabonga Mabena.

“We brought in a lot of young players in the line-up, as you saw. However, we knew we could reinforce the team from the bench, which would help. All of them did well and helped us to get this victory. Congratulations to the team and to Peter, of course.”

With the win on Wednesday, Sundowns are now third in the Betway Premiership with seven points from their opening three matches.
