Sundowns release statement on Lucas Ribeiro’s saga

Lucas Ribeiro celebrate a goal during the FIFA Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns have released a statement addressing the ongoing saga involving star forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who has requested to terminate his contract with the club.

Ribeiro Costa is seeking to terminate his contract with the Tshwane giants and has referred the matter to the FIFA Football Tribunal.

This comes after the Brazilian star attracted interest from various teams after his performances at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA

The 26-year-old also won the Fan vote for the Best Goal of the Tournament, beating out the likes of Lionel Messi. The 2024/25 PSL Player of the Year has been linked with a move to Qatar SC and Brazilian side Fluminense. But it appears interested clubs are unable to reach an agreement with the defending Betway Premiership champions – Sundowns.

In addition, Sundowns defended its conduct during negotiations. The club emphasised that its primary goal was to ensure a fair and just outcome for everyone involved, stating:

“The objective of Sundowns in these discussions and negotiations has always been to advance the interests of the player and the Club and to be fair and just. We also want to contribute to the fulfilment of the interests of all  parties,” the club added.

“Mamelodi Sundowns has received enquiries, particularly after the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, from a few prominent football clubs that have expressed an interest in acquiring the services of certain Sundowns players.”
