Chiefs give McCarthy, Ighodaro & Shinga update

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze has provided an update on Aden McCarthy, Etiosa Ighodaro and Nkanyiso Shinga ahead of their crunch Betway Premiership tie against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday.

Amakhosi hosted a media on Monday morning at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena ahead of the midweek clash set to be hosted at the FNB Stadium. Kick off is 19h30.

The Glamour Boys have kicked off the 2025/26 league season on a positive note, defeating Stellenbosch FC, Polokwane City FC, and Richards Bay FC. And as they prepare to face the defending champions, they will be looking to continue their unbeaten streak.

While addresing journalists Kaze revealed that a few players in the Soweto giants squad had caught the flu.

He further gave an update on McCarthy, who had to be replaced in the first half of the Richards Bay game after picking up an injury last Tuesday. The newly signed duo of Shinga and Ighodaro are also doubts for the Sundowns clash.

โ€œAbout Aden, he hasnโ€™t been training since that day. The medical staff are working hard to get him back on the field, but weโ€™ll have to wait and see how he does tomorrow to decide whether he will be part of the game or not,โ€ said Kaze.

Shinga has yet to debut in an official match, initially due to paperwork issues and more recently because of an undisclosed illness. The player who has filled in at left-back in Shingaโ€™s absence, Bradley Cross, was also reportedly ill, according to Kaze.

On the other hand, Ighodaro, who was introduced to the Amakhosi faithful during last weekโ€™s game against Richards Bay, reportedly picked up a knock.

โ€œWe have Shinga and Cross who have been sick in the last few days. Ighodaro was also injured at training two days ago. But apart from that, everyone is well and ready for the game,” added the Chiefs assistant coach.

Meanwhile, Kaze confirmed that long-term absentees Given Msimango and Rushwin Dortley are unlikely to return until next month. He hinted that Msimango was โ€œdoing betterโ€ and closer to returning โ€œnext monthโ€. Dortleyโ€™s estimated return from injury is expected in early October.
