Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has explained the reasoning behind the club’s decision to sign midfielder Lebohang Maboe.
The Soweto giantsย officially announced the signing of talented attacking midfielder Maboe on Tuesday. The announcement came just hours after FARPost reported that a deal was imminent.
Maboe joins Chiefs on a permanent deal after parting ways with the reigning Betway Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 30-year-old becomes Amakhosi’s 10th acquisition in this transfer window as the club continues to strengthen its squad for the 2025/26 season.
So far, Chiefs have acquired the services of Nkanyiso Shinga, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Ethan Chislett, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Flavio Silva, Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, and Luke Baartman.
Last season, Maboe was in the books of the now-defunct SuperSport United on a loan deal from Bafana Ba Style. During his loan spell at Matsatsantsa, Maboe participated in 16 matches across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Chiefs expressed their excitement about having Maboe on board, believing his arrival will help the team reach greater heights. The club has started the new season exceptionally well, winning their first three league games.

Maboe, who was previously with the clubโs youth development in his teenage years, makes his return to Naturena after playing for SuperSport, Sundowns, and Maritzburg United in the South African top-flight.

Motaung Jr disclosed that they chose to sign the seasoned midfielder due to his his versatility and experience over the years.
โWe know Lebo is a quality player who has gained valuable experience in continental competitions over the past few years. His expertise will be crucial for us in both the domestic league and the CAF Confederation Cup,” said Motaung Jr.
