Major Soccer League [MSL] side Toronto FC’s call on South African international Cassius Mailula has put an end to speculation on his future.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns striker had a loan spell with Moroccan club Wydad AC last season. During his time in Morocco, the 24-year-old made a notable impact, contributing six goals and seven assists across 36 appearances.
After featuring for the Casablanca giants in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, there was speculation that he would be loaned out to Algeria. Rulani Mokwena, newly appointed head coach at MC Alger, was said to be keen on bringing him to Algiers.
However, it appears the attempts were not successful, and his parent club, Toronto, has decided on his future. Mailula, who signed with Toronto FC in July 2023, is expected to return to Toronto for the season.
WHAT TORONTO HAVE SAID ABOUT CASSIUS MAILULA
Toronto’s general manager, Jason Hernandes, confirmed the striker was on his way back to rejoin the team. He said the player and his agent had tried exploring a couple of opportunities.
“Cassius and [his agent] were entertaining a couple of different opportunities. At the end of the day, there was nothing to them in a way they wanted secure full time. And on our side, certainly, there was nothing that we received that we felt strongly enough about needing to put the pedal to the floor. So, the player actually is on his way back to rejoin the team, and he’ll continue on with us and reintegrate.” Hernandes said.
Mailula made eight appearances for Toronto FC before being loaned to Wydad AC, where he participated in all three matches of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign. He will be hoping for a better stint this time around.
However, he will have to compete with Norwegian forward Ola Brynhildsen, who has five goals in 36 appearances this season. There is also Deandre Kerr, who has scored three goals in 15 outings.
