Stanton Fredericks: ‘Of Chiefs’ 10 signings, he sticks out…’

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Stanton Fredericks has singled out one of the club’s new signings who “sticks out” for him as the 2025/26 season gains momentum.

Interestingly, ‘Stiga’, who played for the Glamour Boys from 2001 to 2004, chose a player who has yet to make his debut for the team.

Chiefs have been active in the transfer market, signing 10 players as part of their rebuilding process. The SuperSport pundit made his remarks ahead of the goalless draw between Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

At halftime of the Betway Premiership game, Chiefs introduced Lebohang Maboe as their latest addition. In their previous home game, they also presented Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, and Luke Baartman. Earlier in the transfer window, the club announced the signings of Ethan Chislett, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Flavio Silva, Nkanyiso Shinga, and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

“I think of all the 10 signings they’ve made this season, I think he [Lebohang Maboe] sticks out a lot for me. Yes, [Siphesihle] Ndlovu has had an impact as well, and there’ve been quite a few additions to that,” he said.

“We can speak about Monyane as well, but I think the performance that Maboe showed when he moved to SuperSport [United] on loan from Sundowns showed one of character. When you face challenges, that is when the character comes up, and I think you’re signing a good character because he was able to shake off, I won’t say disappointment of Sundowns, because he played his part.”

He explained that he believes the 30-year-old is the missing link that will connect Chiefs’ midfield to their strikers.

“But then, you’ve been put on loan, and I think this is where he joined the struggling SuperSport, and he showed his qualities. If he plays deep, if he plays further forward, [he’s good]. I do think that the link that Kaizer Chiefs is missing is that link between midfield and strikers, and I think Maboe will do a massive job to add on that.”

Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi will have to wait a little longer before he can unleash the former Maritzburg United and Sundowns utility player. Maboe has not had a pre-season and still needs to work on his fitness before making his senior team debut for his boyhood club.
