Kaizer Chiefs have made two key decisions on the future of talented left-footed centre-back Xolani Cossa. The club has offered a professional contract to the talented young defender and is now planning the next steps in his career development.
Cossa has been performing exceptionally well in the Chiefs’ youth setup, demonstrating readiness for first-team football.
However, due to the emergence of Aden McCarthy and the presence of Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross, opportunities with the senior squad may be limited for the young defender.
Nonetheless, Amakhosi believe Cossa has a bright future and are eager to develop his career while closely monitoring his progress. The club has acted swiftly to secure him on a professional deal, as his development contract was set to expire in June 2026.
Chiefs are seemingly cautious about losing their top young talents. Last season, Khulumani Ndamane left on a free transfer to TS Galaxy, where he has thrived and attracted attention from Mamelodi Sundowns. They also lost Puso Dithejane, who has become a key player at Galaxy. Additionally, the Rockets recently signed Ntando Nkosi, who captained Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge side last season.
Reports indicate Chiefs are engaging in discussions with several clubs that could help advance Cossa’s career. They want to loan the talented defender out for the remainder of the season.
Former Cape Town Spurs technical director Sean Connor was initially keen to bring Cossa to Jwaneng Galaxy, a Botswana-based club competing in the CAF Confederation Cup. However, the challenge became a foreign spot. Cossa has previously been linked to Betway Premiership side, Galaxy, and Owen Da Gama’s Black Lions in Botswana.
WHAT SORT OF PLAYER IS XOLANI COSSA?
The talented centre back is comfortable using both feet and excels at advancing the ball forward. He possesses excellent long-range passing skills and frequently breaks the lines with his incisive passing.
Interestingly, he was part of the Chiefs team that won the Home of Legends Cup in Gqeberha, even though he was an unused substitute.
In 2022, he was named Under-19 Player of the Season and made his debut for the DDC in 2023. At the end of the 2023/24 season, he received the Players’ Player of the Year award on the DDC team. He is regarded as a leader and has previously captained the reserve side.
