Kaizer Chiefs’ newly signed midfielder Lebohang Maboe has broken his silence on his recent move to the Soweto giants, which was finalised during the current transfer window.
Maboe joined Chiefs in August as a free agent after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the previous season.
He was officially unveiled to the Glamour Boys supporters at FNB Stadium during their Betway Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, August 27. The game ended in a goalless draw.
The 30-year-old midfielder has returned to Chiefs after having previously played in the club’s development team. Maboe left the club to seek more playing time elsewhere and went on to make a name for himself at Maritzburg United, which is now known as Durban City FC.
His quality performances at the Team of Choice in KZN earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in August 2018. During his stint at Sundowns, Maboe scored 20 goals and provided 23 assists in over 150 appearances across all competitions.
In recent seasons, the talented attacker’s career was significantly impacted by a series of injuries, which severely limited his playing time with the Brazilians.
After struggling for minutes on the field at Sundowns, Maboe was loaned to SuperSport United for the second half of the previous season. However, his time there was cut short when the club’s status was sold to Siwelele FC.
WHAT MABOE SAID ABOUT JOINING CHIEFS

Maboe has revealed that his return to Chiefs is a privilege. He rejoins his boyhood club after a few weeks as a free agent, having now officially penned a deal with Amakhosi.
“It’s such an honour and privilege to be in such an institute like Kaizer Chiefs. I’m glad that I’m back home,” said Maboe.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a joint initiative between Kaizer Chiefs and Nedbank, the handover of a brand-new multipurpose sports court at Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, on Wednesday. Chiefs were involved in the project as the 2025 Nedbank Cup winners.
“I want to do well with the team, and I want to win silverware with the team. It’s a great feeling to be back at home and welcomed the way I was. So I’m really looking forward to the season ahead.”
Maboe will be looking to contribute to Chiefs’ impressive start to the new season. The Naturena-based side is currently sitting in second place on the league table with 13 points from five matches, having won four and drawn one while keeping five consecutive clean sheets.
