Kaizer Chiefs’ new signing, Lebohang Maboe, has detailed how the move to the Soweto giants came about, revealing when the transfer talks began.

The experienced midfielder joined Chiefs as a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the previous Betway Premiership season.

Maboe spent more than six seasons with the Brazilians, winning a handful of major trophies, including the 2023 African Football League [AFL].

After having a successful spell at Sundowns, Maboe struggled with injuries in the past few years, which limited his game time. In January 2025, the highly-rated star completed a loan move from Sundowns to SuperSport United in a bid to get regular playing minutes.

Following the end of his loan deal at SuperSport, the Tshwane-based side also decided against renewing Maboe’s contract, allowing him to leave for free and join any club of his choice.

MABOE REVEALS THAT TALKS TO JOIN CHIEFS STARTED IN JUNE

The 30-year-old is making a return to Chiefs after coming through the club’s development ranks before moving to Maritzburg United, where he made a name for himself. Maboe impressed in his time at Maritzburg, and he was snapped up by Sundowns in 2018.

With Maboe eying success with his boyhood club, he has disclosed that Amakhosi made their intentions of bringing him on board clear and waited for him after he underwent shoulder surgery.

“Once I knew that I wasn’t going back to Sundowns in June, that’s when the talks started, but it was just unfortunate because I had a shoulder surgery that I had to undergo,” Maboe said.

“I think the team has been so patient with me, and now I’m back at home. All I’m looking to do is to repay the faith that they’ve shown in me and continue working hard.

Maboe will look to return to full fitness after the FIFA international break and contribute to the club’s impressive start to the new season, which has seen them collect 13 points in their five opening matches of the campaign.
