South African attacking midfielder Cassius Mailula has joined Belgian side KV Kortrijk, completing a move from Major League Soccer [MLS] club, Toronto FC.

He joined Kortrijk on a season-long loan deal that includes an option for the club to make the move permanent.

Kortrijk competes in the Belgian First Division B. They are currently top of the table with 12 points after four matches. Kortrijk are yet to lose a game since the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star had returned to his parent club, Toronto, following his loan spell with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club last season.

In his stay at the former Rulani Mokwena-coached side, Mailula featured in 36 games in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing seven assists.

Mailula made his first move abroad when he signed for Toronto in July 2023 from the Betway Premiership reigning champions, Masandawana.

The club expressed its delight at signing the 24-year-old and looks forward to achieving great things with him on the team.

“KV Kortrijk is pleased to announce the arrival of South African Cassius Mailula [24]. The quick and agile attacking midfielder will join our club until the end of the season. KV Kortrijk has also secured a purchase option,” read the club’s official statement.

Meanwhile, Kortrijk’s sporting director, Nils Vanneste, explained why they decided to rope in Mailula for the 2025/26 season.

The sporting director stated that Mailula’s experience will come in handy, having played at the biggest stage, like the FIFA Club World Cup tournament held in the USA not so long ago.

In addition, Mailula also expressed his excitement about joining the club and embarking on this new chapter in his career.

“Hi KV Kortrijk fans! This is Cassius Mailula. I’m looking forward to meeting you all very soon. I also want to take this moment to thank Toronto FC for making this deal happen,” stated Mailula.
