Grobler pokes Chiefs after being snubbed for being ‘past his prime’

Bradley Grobler celebrates scoring against Kaizer Chiefs
Sekhukhune United striker Bradley Grobler has claimed that Kaizer Chiefs turned down the opportunity to sign him a few years ago, as the Soweto giants viewed him as being old and a spent force.
The 37-year-old struck a brace which sank Amakhosi as Babina Noko cruised to a 3-1 victory in a Betway Premiership match at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday night.

This defeat was the Soweto giants’ first of the 2025/26 season, ending a five-match unbeaten streak that had seen them win four and draw one. Grobler was the architect of the assault, leading the charge that handed coach Nasreddine Nabi’s men their first loss. He has now scored six goals in nine games across all competitions this term, as he shows his experience.

The former Platinum Stars man has previously been linked with Chiefs, but no move materialised. Gavin Hunt is on record as saying he had targeted signing Grobler from SuperSport United during the 2020/21 season, when he was in charge of Anakhosi, but a transfer ban tied his hands.
Now, the striker himself says he was told by Chiefs that he was past his sell-by date, but on Tuesday, he haunted Amakhosi despite missing days of training due to health issues.

GROBLER’S PENCHANT TO PUNISH KAIZER CHIEFS

The Babina Noko attacker has scored nine times against Chiefs in the league, taking his tally to 12 goals against Amakhosi in all competitions.
“It feels great. I’ve got to be honest. I haven’t trained in the last four days. I had a chest infection, a throat infection, so I arrived at camp late yesterday [Monday] and played. It went well,” Grobler said on SuperSport TV.

“Sometimes it’s nice scoring against teams that told you that four, five, six years ago you were old and past your prime, so it feels good to be scoring against these teams.
It was a big performance, a performance that is probably going to make people take us a bit more seriously, but we don’t want to put that pressure on ourselves. Obviously, we want to go on and win every game. We’d love to fight for the league, and I think it’s a big stepping stone, even though we’ve got a long way to go.”
While insisting he has nothing against Kaizer Chiefs personally, Grobler reiterated that it felt good to score against them.
“It’s a question I’ve been asked many times, there’s nothing against the team [Chiefs], like I said, the nice thing it’s a team that six, seven years ago told me I was old and past my prime, I must be honest that it feels nice [scoring against Chiefs].”
