‘They need to do the job’: Gould challenges Chiefs players

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould has implored the Soweto giants to take responsibility and get over Tuesday’s 3-1 Betway Premiership defeat by Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

The loss to Babina Noko was Amakhosi’s first league defeat of the season following a five-match unbeaten run. Dropping three points, it was a missed opportunity by third-placed Chiefs to go on top of the Betway Premiership table, and they now have three points fewer than log leaders Sekhukhune.

Gould has identified periods of Tuesday’s match which Babina United fully utilised to walk home with maximum points.

“Nothing is too much, I think everybody is there employed, they need to do the job and if you get the nod to do the job, it’s not about who is not there, it’s you,” Gould told FARPost.

“The individual need to take ownership and shape and say ‘This is my opportunity, I’m going to take it as it comes.’ The planning by Sekhukhune was better and they are very good when it comes to the first five minutes of the game, the last 10 minutes of the first half and that’s when they scored their goals, in critical phases.

“I think they came out guns blazing and they are one of the top attacking teams in the league, if you look where they are, it was a table topper. Whoever wins goes on top of the table and fortunately Sekhukhune won and unfortunately Chiefs lost the game.

“It’s always good to be in those table-topping contests, it  brings out great results.”

TEST OF CHARACTER FOR CHIEFS

Following the Sekhukhune setback, Chiefs are under scrutiny to see if they have the attitude to dust themselves from the defeat.

They are currently in Luanda to face Kabuscorp in a CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round, first leg confrontation on Saturday. That game will spell out if the Glamour Boys have the aptitude to pick themselves up on the backdrop of a defeat after struggling for consistency in recent seasons.

Also, the Chiefs camp experienced a major development in their technical team with coach Nasreddine Nabi’s departure set to be officially announced. Mental strength within the squad is at its biggest test to see if they can put the developments behind them and register victory in Luanda.
