Brandon Petersen reflects on Chiefs’ Carling Knockout draw

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen speaking

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has weighed in on the Soweto giants’ Carling Knockout Cup Last 16 draw, which will see them face Stellenbosch FC away from home.

Petersen was speaking to the media at the Carling Knockout Cup event on Monday at the Dome, FNB Stadium in Soweto, shortly after learning that Chiefs will be playing Stellenbosch in the second cup competition of the 2025/26 season.

The exact date, venue, and kick-off time for all the Round of 16 fixtures are yet to be confirmed, with the PSL set to make an announcement in due time.

Chiefs and Stellenbosch have already faced off this season, with Amakhosi securing a comfortable 2-0 victory in their Betway Premiership opener at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town in August. That win kicked off a strong start for Chiefs, who went on a five-game unbeaten streak, including four wins, before recently suffering two straight losses.

Petersen believes Stellenbosch will be better prepared this time around. He noted that the encounter is always exciting, and while Chiefs have a strong record against Stellies—winning five of their last seven away encounters—he expects a tougher challenge. Last season, Chiefs defeated Stellenbosch on all three occasions across all competitions.

“I think it’s a good draw. We have played Stellenbosch a couple of times and we have already played them this season,” said Chiefs’ number goalie Petersen. “It is always an exciting fixture, always a good game and a tough one.

“But yeah we’re looking forward to going back to Cape Town to face Stellenbosch. They will be more prepared this time but I think as a team, we are looking forward to the fixture and hopefully we can go all the way in this cup and bring more silverare to the club after winning the Nedbank Cup last season.

Meanwhile, Petersen emphasised the importance of staying calm and focused following Amakhosi’s recent back-to-back losses in all competitions. Chiefs lost to Sekhukhune United in a home league game before suffering a defeat to Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP in the first-leg of their preliminary round tie in Talatona near Luanda.

“…For us I think we should not panic and to start doubting ourselves. We’ve proven to ourselves that we are capable of doing well,  defending well and not conceding goals. So I think it’s for us to just to take a step back and analyse our games and see where it went wrong and grab the opportunity to correct our mistakes,” added Petersen.

Chiefs will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Marumo Gallants in their next league encounter. The fixture is set for Wednesday, September 24, at 17:30 at FNB Stadium, coinciding with Heritage Day.
