Siwelele ends losing streak while Chippa holds Stellies to a draw

Siwelele players celebrate goal with fans

The Betway Premiership concluded the week’s round of fixtures with two of the lowest-scoring clashes of the weekend on Sunday. A slender 1-o home victory for Siwelele over Marrumo Gallants, while bottom of the table Chippa United held Stellenbosch FC to a 0-0 draw.

The clash between Siwelele and Marumo Gallants at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein was effectively a local derby on neutral ground. Although listed as Siweleleโ€™s home fixture, neither team felt like visitors because both sides regularly use the stadium for their home games, essentially granting them a shared advantage.

Plagued by growing issues both on and off the field, Siwelele desperately sought a much-needed victory, having not tasted success since the first game of the season against Golden Arrows.

Despite Gallants controlling the flow of the game, Siwelele proved clinical. With their first and only shot on target in the opening half, Tebogo Potsane secured the opener with an expertly executed finish in the 39th minute.

Gallants returned for the second half and maintained their dominance in possession, yet they failed to find the crucial equaliser. The 1-0 win sparked celebrations among the Siwelele faithful, who saw their team finally break a difficult seven-game winless streak.

The battle at the bottom proved to be a stalemate, with Chippa United and Stellenbosch FC producing the Betway Premiership’s only goalless draw of the weekend at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium in East London.

Chippa, looking to bounce back from a mid-week defeat, hosted a Stellenbosch side enduring an uncharacteristic four-match winless run. The game itself was poor, yielding just four total shots on target, and confirmed Stellies’ recent struggle to score, marking their third consecutive match without a goal.

The single point was unprofitable for the host side, leaving Chippa rock bottom at 16th position. While Stellenbosch moved up one spot to 14th, the key movement on the table saw Mamelodi Sundowns assume familiar territory as the new Betway Premiership log leaders.
