Du Preez comes clean on Chiefs’ goal-scoring woes

Kaizer Chiefs forward Ashley du Preez has admitted his side is blunt in front of goal, a problem that has haunted them in recent seasons.

In the seven Betway Premiership matches Chiefs have played so far this term, they have managed to score as many goals. Amakhosi have also found the back of the net once in regulation time of two CAF Confederation Cup games.

Usually registering slim victories, the Soweto giants have scored more than once in a single game only on one occasion when they beat Stellenbosch FC 2-0 in their season opener. That has raised concern about Chiefs’ qualities upfront.

Du Preez has featured in four games this season, especially under assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze more than when Nasreddine Nabi was in charge and the striker opens up on his individual performances and team’s struggles in attack.

“I think there is no difference in my game, coach Nabi knew how I was playing and even coach Khalil, so there is no difference,” Du Preez told reporters.

“At the end of the day it’s the coach’s decision about the player they want to play in certain games. For me, we have good players up front and we, as a team, are working on scoring goals in games.”

He added: “But I think for me, it is just that we need to keep on working in training. I know we lack in scoring goals, and I think we have good players in front who can definitely score a lot of goals. It is just a process that we need to work on each day in training and take to matches. But as a team, we are definitely working on scoring goals. ”

DU PREEZ ADMITS HE LACKS COMPOSURE

“Fron my point of view, Looking at my game even in the past seasons, I have been creating chances, and for me, it is just that composure in me when I’m in the final third,” added the former Stellenbosch striker.

“Like I said, collectively, we are working on it. As an individual, that is where I lack in my game and to be honest, I need to work very hard on converting my chances I create.”

Chiefs now prepare to face AmaZulu FC in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday. Victory would lift the Soweto giants to position three on the table from fifth place.

They come up against Arthur Zwane-coached Usuthu who are struggling for consistency and are ninth on the table.
