Former PSL defender Vuyo Mere has reflected on life after football. The 41-year-old officially hung up his boots five months ago.
Mere called time on his professional football career after 23 years, having made his debut in the SA top-flight back in 2001 in Hellenic FC colours.
The retired right-back played his last professional football at TS Galaxy, where he also served briefly as an assistant coach before cutting ties with the club.
In his 23 years of professional career, he also turned out for teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Platinum Stars, and Bidvest Wits.

VUYO MERE REVEALS WHAT HE’S CURRENTLY DOING AFTER RETIRING FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL
Mere disclosed that he recently finished his CAF C Coaching Licence diploma and is now seeking a coaching gig, as he enjoys developing young talents and witnessing their success.
”I just completed my CAF C Coaching Licence diploma, so I’m still knocking on doors now. I love coaching and enjoy giving back and helping the young ones,” Mere told FARPost in an exclusive interview.
“I think the little experience that TS Galaxy gave me in coaching contributed to a lot of youngsters who went on to play for bigger teams.
“Even today, I’m still getting calls saying; ‘Coach, we miss you’, and this is what is missing at the moment.” Maybe one day, somebody will open the door for me to help. I want to give back to South African football because it has made me who I am today.
“So, I just can’t go on and sit at home with this experience that I have acquired throughout my playing career.”
Mere was one of the 2025 MTN8 ambassadors, alongside other SA football legends like Fabian McCarthy, Rodney Ramagalela, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Lucky Lekgwathi, Brent Carelse, Morgan Gould, and Njabulo Manqana.
