Kaizer Chiefs have been eliminated from the Carling Knockout following a 5-4 defeat by Stellenbosch FC in a penalty shootout at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday. The match ended 0-0 after extra-time.

The match was delayed for 30 minutes due to supporters who were still making their way into the stadium.

One of the notable changes for Amakhosi was the inclusion of goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari in place of Brandon Peterson. It was the only change in the starting line-up from the side that played to a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu FC on Wednesday.

The home side also made a change in their goalkeeping department with Oscarine Masuluke in place of Sage Stephens. They also made several on-field changes with Thapelo Mokobodi, Thabo Moloisane and Khomotjo Lekoloane returning to the starting line-up.

Khanyisa Mayo had the first real chance of the match in the 15th minute, but his long-range shot hit the crossbar.

Ntwari was finally tested 10 minutes before the half-time break with a shot by Muzomuhle Khanyi from outside the box. But the Rwanda international was well placed to stop the shot.

Both teams failed to create clear-cut chances in the first half and went into the half-time break at 0-0.

The two clubs came back from the break rejuvenated. Chiefs were the first to pose a threat with a long-range shot from Mduduzi Shabalala, but hit the post.

Masuluke suffered a serious injury in the same incident after he collided with Mayo in the process. He was subsequently replaced by Sage Stephens.

Despite efforts from both sides, the match ended in a goalless draw after regulation time, taking the match to extra-time.

They also finished 0-0 after the first half of extra time. But there was drama in the early stages of the extra time in the second half. This is after Stellenbosch defender Thapelo Mokobodi was issued with a red card for a foul on Pule Mmodi.
