‘It’s their loss’: Kannemeyer on Chiefs snubbing Grobler

Bradley Grobler of Sekhukhune United warming up

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender David Kannemeyer is convinced Amakhosi blundered by not signing Bradley Grobler a few years ago.

Gavin Hunt is on record, saying he planned to bring the veteran Sekhukhune United FC striker to Naturena when he was Amakhosi coach, but a player transfer ban tied Amakhosi’s hands in the market. Grobler himself opened up that Amakhosi snubbed him, telling the player that he was too old to play for the Soweto giants.

During the season when Hunt was at Chiefs, Grobler scored 16 PSL goals for SuperSport United FC and went on to reach double figures at the end of the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, something Amakhosi strikers have been struggling to do.

Kannemeyer feels the Soweto giants should have continued pursuing the striker, who is now 37 and is enjoying some top form for Sekhukhune. He currently has eight goals in 12 matches across all competitions.

BRADLEY GROBLER KEEPS ON PROVING HIMSELF AND CHIEFS ERRED

“Yes, I would think so [that Chiefs made a mistake by not signing Grobler]. You know it’s difficult, every coach has his own way and the way he signs players, but for me, I think Bradley has proven year after year that he can do the job, so it’s their loss,” Kannemeyer told FARPost.

“Obviously, he is playing where he is playing and proving himself over and over again. I guess football goes like that, and he is just enjoying his football, doing what he needs to do, and that is scoring goals.”

Interestingly, Grobler recently scored a brace, which sank Chiefs in a Betway Premiership match. His exploits come as Amakhosi strikers have been struggling for goals. Now eight games into the season, only Flavio Silva has scored more than one goal for Chiefs, something that exposes their strikeforce.

That puts pressure on Amakhosi forwards to improve themselves and justify having eight strikers in their squad.
