At 33, former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC star Keagan Buchanan has decided to hang up his boots, announcing his immediate retirement from professional football.
Buchanan has called time on his career after spending the past few years as a free agent since parting ways with Cape Town Spurs in the 2023/24 season during their time in the Betway Premiership.
The talented midfielder had a decade-long career in the SA top-flight after making a breakthrough in the PSL with Bloemfontein Celtic in 2013.
After impressing at Siwelele, Buchanan completed a big move to Chiefs at the start of the 2016/17 campaign. During his time at Amakhosi, the former Ajax Cape Town youth product struggled to secure regular playing time, having featured in 10 matches across all competitions without scoring a goal.

Buchanan left the Glamour Boys after two seasons and went on to play for teams such as Maritzburg United, AmaZulu FC, and Cape Town Spurs.
With over 150 appearances across all competitions, three goals, and 14 assists in the elite league, Buchanan has announced his retirement from football, thanking everyone who has been part of his journey.
“From an 8-year-old kid at Ajax with a dream, to living that dream on pitches across the country – I can only be grateful,” Buchanan said on Instagram on Thursday night.
“Football has given me everything: memories, lessons, friendships, and moments I’ll carry for life. As this chapter closes, I give all glory to God for every step, every setback, and every comeback. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey – teammates, coaches, fans, family, and friends. This game shaped me. But most importantly, it prepared me for what’s next.”
