Kaizer Chiefs winger Mfundo Vilakazi has shed light on how his participation in the Under-20 FIFA World Cup will fuel the team’s ambition, especially as they face AS Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.

Vilakazi travelled with the Glamour Boys to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo to face AS Simba in the first-leg of the second preliminary round of the Confederation Cup.

Chiefs advanced to the second round of the competition with a 5-4 win on penalties against Kabuscorp SCP of Angola. The match finished with a 1-1 draw over two legs after Kabuscorp won the home tie 1-0 while Chiefs secured victory in the return leg with the same scoreline.

Following the close call against Kabuscorp, the Soweto giants have hit a two-game winless streak, drawing 1-1 with AmaZulu FC in the Betway Premiership and then suffering a penalty shootout exit [5-4] against Stellenbosch FC in the 2025 Carling Knockout Cup.

Following the conclusion of the FIFA international break in the past few days, Chiefs are shifting their focus to continental football, aiming to walk away with positive results.

The talented attacker Vilakazi has shared his thoughts on the match against AS Simba, stressing that Chiefs need to win at least two away goals and finish off the tie at home the following week.

‘Obrigado’, as he’s famously known, recently returned from the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Chile, where South Africa fell short in the Round of 16. The left-footed winger was a creative spark for Amajita as they made it out of the group stages.

“Chile was great, even though we were knocked out in the Last 16. We gained invaluable experience, and I plan to use it here at the team,” Vilakazi said on the club’s website.

“It’s important to score a goal or two in the match on Saturday to gain an advantage so we can finish the job in Joburg next weekend when we host Simba in Dobsonville.”
