Beganovic explains why Galaxy signed Nigerian goalkeeper

TS Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic has explained why his side decided to rope in Nigerian goalkeeper Kayode Bankole.

Bankole was unveiled by the Rockets on Friday, 17 October. Bankole signed for the Mpumalanga-based team on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old goal-minder had been without a club since August 2025 after parting ways with Remo Stars FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League. Bankole was the 16th signing for the Tim Sukazi-owned team this season.

Before the acquisition of Bankole, Galaxy had their number one goalkeeper, Ira Tapรฉ, who was competing with Sipho Maseti and Nkosingabele Madela.

WHAT ADNAN BEGANOVIC SAID ABOUT KAYODE BANKOLE’S ACQUISITION

Coach Beganovic disclosed that they signed the Nigerian goalkeeper because they wanted someone to challenge Ira Tapรฉ for the number one position at the club.

The Galaxy coach was speaking following their 2-1 defeat to Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership clash on Saturday night at the Seshego Stadium, outside Polokwane.

“You know, he has been with us for about one and a half months. We tried to find a second goalkeeper who can compete with the first goalkeeper,” said Beganovic.

“We always try to have similar players in the same position so that they can compete for that position. I don’t like it when I only have one player in a position who can relax. In a training session, I want to create a competition.

“So, I think with that, we can only improve and push ourselves more, so we can have quality. If he trains and thinks like that and puts in the hard work, I think he is behind us.”

Currently, Galaxy are placed eighth on the Betway Premiership standings with 13 points from nine outings.

The side will now shift their focus to their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals against Golden Arrows away from home on Sunday, 26 October, with kick-off set for 15:00.
