DDC: Durban City wallop AmaZulu, Pirates maintain winning streak

Durban City DDC team celebrate goal

It was another nightmare at the Princess Magogo Stadium for AmaZulu FC, who slumped to a heavy 4-0 defeat against Durban City FC in the DStv Diski Challenge on Sunday.

Usuthu sought redemption after coming from a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in their last game.

However, their neighbours, Durban City, had other plans. The two teams displayed a balanced contest in the first half, with Durban City leading 1-0. The visitors came back to register three more goals, making it 4-0, to demonstrate a dominant second-half performance.

With this result and Siwelele’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Polokwane City FC on Sunday the DDC log standings have seen big changes.

Siwelele leapfrogged AmaZulu to claim fifth place, and victorious Durban City secured a massive jump from 14th up to seventh.

Orlando Pirates have continued where they left off, earning yet another comfortable victory over their most recent opponents. The DDC log leaders cruised past Stellenbosch FC with a 3-0 victory on Saturday.

The buccaneers have kept their foot on the throttle as they are still in pursuit of their first DDC title. Their latest result is their sixth straight win, a run built on a near-impenetrable defence that has conceded just a single goal.”

However, second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns are hot on the heels of the log lead. Three first-half goals were enough for Masandawana as they edged a fiery Golden Arrows 3-2 at full-time on Saturday.

The victory over Arrows has put the league contenders at 16 points, narrowing the gap [three points] between themselves and Pirates.

Meanwhile, the DDC reigning champions continue to toil at midtable. Kaizer Chiefs played to a 2-2 stalemate against Marumo Gallants on Sunday. Thus, Chiefs have registered a third consecutive draw, with no victory in five games.

With a single point attained, Amakhosi have gone up to nine points, and one up in the log standings [position seven].
