Upington City FC have appointed former Moroka Swallows coach Musa Nyatama as head coach amid Abram Mongoya’s exit. FARPost has established that Nyatama has penned a two-year contract.
The move comes as the club parts ways with former coach Abram Mongoya following a disciplinary saga. The Motsepe Foundation Championship side moved swiftly to secure Nyatama’s signature after indications that Mongoya’s tenure had reached an inevitable conclusion.
Mongoya has been subject to an internal disciplinary process due to what the club considered gross misconduct after he abandoned his club duties to take up a role with the Lesotho national team without the required club approval.
Mongoya’s unsanctioned involvement with the Lesotho national side, which saw him miss club engagements, reportedly led to a formal recommendation for his dismissal, prompting the club to pursue a replacement.

MUSA NYATAMA BRINGS EXPERIENCE TO UPINGTON
The appointment sees Nyatama finally take up the Upington City post, a role he was previously linked with before the start of the current season. At the time, the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns player was snapped up by Chippa United to serve as assistant to Sinethemba Badela.
However, the two were axed by the Eastern Cape club just three games into the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.
Nyatama now brings his coaching experience, which includes a successful run as caretaker coach for Swallows, where he steered them clear of relegation, to the Northern Cape side. Upington are currently sixth in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, having won three of their six games, drawn one and lost two.
They will be hoping Nyatama can provide immediate stability and mount a serious challenge for promotion following the distraction of the coaching controversy.
