PSL coaching carousel spins as changes loom at four clubs

Dan Malesela at Baroka FC

The coaching landscape in the PSL has been thrown into disarray with impending changes at four clubs. Baroka FC were the first to announce the suspension of head coach Dan Malesela and his assistant Job Maphutha.

The former top-flight club is currently languishing in 15th place on the 16-team table, having managed a return of just one win, one draw and five losses.

Barokaโ€™s chairman confirmed the suspension, stating that the disciplinary process is underway, but sources suggest that Maleselaโ€™s departure is imminent. The club is reportedly moving swiftly to secure a replacement.

Adding to the instability, Upington City FC is also likely to part ways with head coach Abram Mongoya. Mongoya recently faced a disciplinary hearing for allegedly accepting a role with the Lesotho national team without the club’s approval, a situation which saw him miss club duties.

Despite the off-field drama, Upington City has enjoyed a relatively solid start, currently sitting in sixth place with three wins, one draw and two losses. Mongoya’s expected dismissal creates a vacancy that is already attracting attention.

MORE COACHING CHANGES LOOM IN THE PSL

The potential coaching vacancies have immediately sparked speculation about musical chairs in the Motsepe Foundation Championship dugout.

Baroka FC has reportedly identified Humphrey Mlwane, the current coach of The Bees, as a prime target to succeed Malesela. Former Pretoria University coach Tlisane Motaung is also a coach Baroka are considering. He has been out of work since leaving AmaTuks at the end of the 2025/26.

Mlwane’s side, currently fifth with a record of three wins, two draws, and two losses in seven matches, has impressed this season, making him a sought-after man for the struggling Limpopo side. Should Mlwane depart, The Bees would be left scrambling for a new man at the helm.

Former Moroka Swallows tactician, Musa Nyatama, is now being heavily linked as a potential replacement for Mongoya at Upington City FC

Nyatama has coaching experience in both the Betway Premiership and the second tier and is reportedly a strong candidate as the Northern Cape side looks to stabilise its technical team.

Meanwhile, Chippa United are also reviewing the future of Luc Eymael, who joined the club two months ago.
