Kaizer Chiefs talented striker Khanyisa Mayo has spoken out on his ambitions to return to the Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the 2025 AFCON and 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The left-footed attacker recently returned to the Betway Premiership to join Chiefs on a season-long loan from CR Belouizdad.

Mayo spent the previous season in Algeria with Belouizdad after signing from Cape Town City FC following his impressive performances in the Mother City.

The former Richards Bay FC star joined Amakhosi after CR Belouizdad coach Sead Ramovic publicly revealed that Mayo was not in future plans

After a fallout with Ramovic, Mayo inked a deal with the Glamour Boys, a club that showed interest in his services before heading to North Africa.

In his early days at Chiefs, Mayo received a mixed bag reception by the club supporters after initially arriving with a lot of hype around him. The 27-year-old was recently involved in a costly error where Pule Mmodi looked to have scored a goal before Mayo toe poked the ball over the line despite being in a off-side position which drew a lot of criticism from fans.

The Mthatha-born forward says club has put the incident behind them and he’s looking to work hard and return to the national team after last receiving a call-up in March 2024 for Bafana friendlies against Andorra and Algeria.

“I would definitely want to get back to the national team, if the team [Chiefs] is doing good then we stand a chance to be in the national team,” Mayo said.

“If the team is doing good and we’re performing then we stand a chance to be in the national team because no player doesn’t want to be in the national team.”

Meanwhile, Mayo will be aiming to help Chiefs collect maximum points against Siwelele FC in the league on Wednesday night at FNB Stadium. So far, the highly-rated attacker has featured in four matches across all competitions and scored one goal for the Soweto giants.
