Cedric Kaze settles Chiefs captaincy confusion, confirms new captain

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has officially clarified the team’s captaincy confusion by confirming the appointment of the new permanent captain.

The captaincy at Naturena has changed hands following the departure of former skipper Yusuf Maart.

Former Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi, who recently left the club, had named Angolan defender Inacio Miguel as the captain for the current season. However, Miguel later passed the armband to club academy product Zitha Kwinika, publicly stating that Kwinika was more deserving of the responsibility due to his long history and leadership qualities at the club.

In the goalless draw against Siwelele FC on Wednesday, Brandon Petersen was seen wearing the armband, raising questions about the true leader of Amakhosi. Speaking to the media post-match, Kaze stated that the โ€˜new technical teamโ€™ had made a decisive move.

WHAT KAZE SAID ABOUT THE CHIEFSโ€™ CAPTAINCY

“We have decided as the technical team of the club that Brandon Petersen will now be the captain of the club moving forward,” Kaze announced.

Petersen, who has been a consistent performer for Amakhosi this season, now steps into the role, providing a much-needed clear line of leadership for the Soweto giants.

The Cape Town-born shot-stopper is not new to the role, having worn the armband in recent seasons. This season, he has been in impressive form, keeping six clean sheets in nine league outings. He has conceded five goals in the league.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, after featuring three times, he has kept two clean sheets and conceded one goal.

The Soweto giants shift focus to the CAF interclub competition when they welcome DRCโ€™s AS Simba on Sunday at the Dobsonville Stadium. Chiefs played a goalless draw away last weekend and will hope to win at home to book a place in the group stages.
