The fall from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe League has shaken Cape Town Spurs to the core. The club now faces a painful rebuild after waving goodbye to a list of experienced footballers.
Among the most high-profile exits are, of course, Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman to Kaizer Chiefs, as well as Liam Bern to AmaZulu FC.
Midfielder Khaya Mfecane also moved to the Premier Division club after joining Chippa United as a free agent, while goalkeeper Aden Dreyer joined Durban City FC.
When Ernst Middendorp and his right-hand man Benson Mhlongo packed their bags, Spurs wasted no time hitting the reset button. In came two familiar South African football names — former Bafana Bafana defenders Nassief Morris as head coach and Tyren Arendse as his assistant. Meanwhile, Ebrahim Seedat found a new home at Kruger United in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, while Keenan Bezuidenhout took his talents abroad to Gulf United in the United Arab Emirates.
On the arrivals list, CT Spurs have added seven new players from last season’s ABC Motsepe League and promoted five from their own reserve side.
