Botswana’s Orebonye hails Wydad squad as his career best after Ziyech signing

Botswana international striker Tumisang Orebonye believes he’s part of the finest squad of his career at Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.

His glowing assessment follows the sensational signing of former Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, adding a significant boost to an already formidable roster.

Orebonye, whose journey has taken him across the continent, with stints in Algeria, Morocco, and Libya, is relishing the high-calibre talent around him.

“It’s the best squad I’ve been around in my career,” Orebonye told FARPost. “We have Ziyech, [Mohamed] Rayhi, [Nordin] Amrabat, and two guys who played in Ligue 1. The quality is immense.”

Wydad’s recent additions have certainly turned heads. Ziyech, who shone for Ajax before his move to Chelsea, brings his many years of overseas experience. Last season, Wydad bolstered their attack by securing Nordin Amrabat, a veteran winger with Premier League experience at Watford and Hull City, alongside the talented forward Mohamed Rayhi.

For the 29-year-old Orebonye, who has spent five years in the Botola playing for Olympique Khourigba and AS FAR Rabat before joining Wydad, the level of competition in training is palpable.

“At training, it’s really competitive, at the game, that’s where you see the quality coming out,” he explained. “You can see things happen for themselves. The things the guys are able to do are impressive.”

With this wealth of talent, the forward is setting the bar high for the team’s ambitions this season.

“With this kind of squad, we have no excuses. We have to win the league and the CAF Confederation Cup. We’re fighting for all this. It’s possible. Personally, I want to win Botola,” Orebonye declared.

Wydad, also home to South African Thembinkosi Lorch, has made a strong start to their league campaign, sitting third on the log with three wins and one draw from their first four games. They are currently two points behind the log leaders MAS FES, but have the advantage of two games in hand.

“We have two games in hand over MAS FES. We’re going to play four games before the next FIFA break. If we get maximum points, it’ll be good for us,” Orebonye added.

The Zebras’ forward believes this opportunity comes at the ideal moment. “When Wydad wanted me, I was still at Khourigba; now I came with experience and maturity. I feel this is the perfect time,” he said.
