Talented Sekhukhune United defender Medupi Thokolo has shared some insight on why he looked up to Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala.
Thokolo has made a huge mark since joining the Sekhukhune side at the beginning of the 2025/26 season. He joined the club from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars.
He has already bagged two Betway Premiership Man of the Match awards earlier in the season.
The 21-year-old has spoken out about his ambitions and players that he looked up to before turning professional.
WHY SEKHUKHUNE UNITED DEFENDER ADMIRES MOTHOBI MVALA
“Growing up, I watched a lot of European football. But then, if I had to choose a South African defender, I would say Mothobi Mvala,โ Thokolo told FARPost.

โWe possess similar characteristics, and growing up, my father was a Sundowns fan. I used to watch a lot of Sundowns games. I just watched a lot of Sundowns games. But in Europe, I admire Virgil van Dijk a lot,โ he added.
MEDUPI THOKOLO SHARES HIS LONG-TERM BAFANA BAFANA AMBITIONS
The down-to-earth defender says his personal ambition is to break into the national team, although he remains patient about it.
“The only goal that I set for myself is to get a national team call-up because I am new to the league [Betway Premiership,โ declared Thokolo.
โSo I don’t want to set a lot of expectations, and the next thing I don’t do is achieve what I expected to achieve. Obviously, mentally, that would put me in a bad place, and I won’t think as good as I did coming here.
โSo things like goals and targets will be things of next season. Right now, I didn’t expect to play regularly. So I guess everything just came off guard.”
