Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has set himself an ambitious target topping his priority list as he continues with his solid performances between the sticks.
The 31-year-old kept another clean sheet during Friday’s Betway Premiership match against Durban City FC, with Amakhosi winning 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium. It was the Chiefs captain’s ninth match without conceding a goal this season.
He has kept nine clean sheets in 14 games across all competitions and, in the process, has shipped in seven goals
At the start of the season, the former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper enjoyed a run of five successive games without being breached.
PETERSEN RAISING HIS HAND UP FOR BAFANA RETURN AHEAD OF 2025 AFCON
Bafana Bafana are set to participate at the 2025 AFCON finals in December and January. Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef opens up on Petersen’s target.
“Congratulations to Petersen, congratulations to the goalkeeper coach for a good job he’s doing with him,” Ben Youssef said.
“The target of Petersen is to go back to Bafana Bafana, to be part of the national team. He’s targeting that, and we are following him.
“I think he needs to continue to work to put pressure on the coach of the national team. Why not be part of the squad in AFCON?”
However, Petersen remains outside Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ plans. He was overlooked for the September and October national team camps as South Africa pushed for qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Broos has again excluded Petersen from his preliminary squad for the November 14 international friendly match against Zambia. The Belgian has opted for usual faces like captain Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine and Ricardo Goss.
Sekhukhune’s Renaldo Leaner and AmaZulu custodian Darren Johnson also feature in the provisional selection. Statistically, Petersen ranks higher than his PSL compatriots in clean sheets.
However, Petersen’s record might be attributed to an improvement in the Chiefs defence. In recent years, Amakhosi’s backline has been criticised for being porous.
