Stellies suffer another blow as Durban City edge Gallants

Siwelele FC players celebrating a goal

Siwelele FC delivered a crushing blow to Stellenbosch FC as Durban City FC squeezed past Marumo Gallants in a nail-biting Betway Premiership match on Wednesday night.

Stellenbosch’s woeful 2025/26 season continued as they lost 2-0 to Siwelele FC at Athlone Stadium, while Durban City edged out Marumo Gallants at the Chatsworth Stadium.

Siwelele FC came into this match aiming to arrest their inconsistent form. They managed a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in their last match, and they desperately needed to keep the winning form.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch have struggled to find their footing in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, having lost 2-0 to TS Galaxy in their last match. With the CAF Confederations Cup group phase approaching, the task ahead seems daunting for Steve Barker’s side.

In the match, Tebogo Potsane thrust Siwelele FC ahead after just three minutes of play, setting the tone for the match. The former Kaizer Chiefs forward slotted the ball home from a beautiful cross that was curled into the box by Siviwe Magidigidi.

That was all Siwelele FC needed to lead at halftime, despite Stellies’ spirited efforts to restore parity. Siwelele FC returned from the break with renewed impetus and this time Magidigidi turned from provider to scorer.

The 20-year-old doubled Siwelele FC’s score on the 49th minute, capitalizing on poor communication between Stellies’ defenders. As a result, Siwelele FC leaped to 10th position with 14 points on their tally after 12 matches. On the other hand, Stellenbosch FC are 15th on the Betway Premiership table with nine points from 12 attempts.

HAASHIM DOMINGO POWERS DURBAN CITY TO VICTORY

At the Chatsworth Stadium, former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Haashim Domingo was the hero after scoring the solitary goal Durban City needed to win.

Durban City came into this match looking to turn their fortunes around after losing their last three matches to AmaZulu, Richards Bay, and Kaizer Chiefs. In addition, their opponents, Marumo Gallants, were also coming off a disappointing 4-0 loss to Golden Arrows last weekend.

The match was a tight contest between the two teams, and there was nothing to separate them at halftime, as they were both slow to move out of their blocks.

However, Durban City finally broke the deadlock after 79 minutes of trying. Haashim Domingo scored their goal and was assisted by Samkelo Maseko following a swift counter-attack. With this win, Durban City seems to have turned a corner.
