‘That was the stumbling block’: Agent on Kodisang’s failed Chiefs move

Prosport International CEO Mike Makaab has opened up about Kobamelo Kodisang’s failed transfer to Kaizer Chiefs, revealing the ‘stumbling block’ that ultimately derailed the highly anticipated transfer to Naturena.

Kodisang is currently in the book of Portuguese top-flight side AVS Futebop SAD after joining the club on a season-long loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. The highly-rated winger signed with AVS in a bid to bring his career back on track after spending the previous season on the sidelines at Masandawana.

In his one-season stay at Sundowns, Kodisang scored two goals and contributed two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions. He joined the Brazilians ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership from Moreirense FC in Portugal.

Before returning to the PSL with a long-term Sundowns deal, Kodisang was one of the best South African players in Europe. In the two seasons with Moreirense before joining Downs, the skilful attacker scored 14 goals and provided six assists in 67 appearances.

WHAT MIKE MAKAAB SAID ABOUT CHIEFS’ PAST INTEREST IN KODISANG

A few seasons ago, Kodisang was linked with a move to Chiefs while he was in the colours of Sporting Braga.

And his agent, Mike Makaab, has since revealed that the move didn’t go through because Braga’s valuation of Kodisang was slightly higher.

“There was interest from Kaizer Chiefs, but you must understand that at the time he was contracted to Braga, on loan at Moreirense,” Makaab told FARPost.

“And Braga were not going to release him for a small fee; they valued him very highly. So that was the stumbling block. Again, it’s easy to point fingers at a football club, at a football player, and at a football agent when you are looking from the outside.

“We must understand that these things have to align; the football club that is showing an interest in the player, and the selling club have to be on the same page. Football transfers are more complicated than people think; they are only easy when a player is a free agent. So there was interest but no formal offer.”
