How far is Broos from finalising his AFCON squad? Bafana coach paints a picture

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has issued an update on his progress in coming up with the final list of players he will take to the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.

The continental competition is edging closer, kicking off on December 21. South Africa are set to face Egypt, Zimbabwe and Angola in Group B at the continental competition.

The 1996 African champions are intensifying their preparations for AFCON. They have lined up an international friendly match against Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Broos made some bold decisions in picking his men to face Zambia when he dropped the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng, Grant Kekana, Patrick Maswanganyi, Iqraam Rayners and Luke le Roux. The Belgian has also insisted that in-form Wydad Casablanca attacker Thembinkosi Lorch does not fit into his plans.

Players summoned for the current camp are a hint of what to expect from Broos’ final selection. Bafana are scheduled to regroup for final AFCON preparations on December 8, with the travelling squad expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

“We are in preparation for AFCON, and now it’s not a moment to do experiments. I have to focus everything on AFCON. Maybe that’s why some players are not there,” said Broos.

“That’s why I also want a good preparation and have a good game against Zambia. I said that maybe for me, 75 per cent of the selection is made for AFCON.

“But now it’s only to see a few positions, maybe this one or the other one. But that is the most important thing for me that we don’t have any doubts anymore, and we can start the preparation on the 8th of December, and we don’t have surprises any more.”
