US-based South African coach Lebo Moloto has shared some insight on why he believes former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell has enjoyed success in the Major League Soccer [MLS].
Carnell was recently awarded the Major League Soccer Coach of the Year after guiding Philadelphia Union to their third MLS regular season title.
Philadelphia finished the league with 20 wins, six draws, and eight defeats across 34 matches. Fellow MLS technical staff, media, and current MLS players voted for the 48-year-old.
Moloto, who recently retired to take up a coaching role at Tulsa SC Academy, says he has observed Carnell’s playing style over the years.
WHAT LEBO MOLOTO MAKES OF BRADLEY CARNELL’S SUCCESS IN THE MLS
Moloto has also described the kind of football Philadelphia plays under the former Kaizer Chiefs defender.
“I have watched him play. They play good football. Their transition is very good,” Moloto told FARPost.

“When he was still at New York Red Bulls [as assistant coach], they were pretty fun to watch. Transition was their biggest thing. They would press high, and I think he has done some of that [at Philadelphia]. So he has done well to be honest.”
SOUTH AFRICAN COACH COMMENDED FOR ALWAYS ROPING IN LOCAL PLAYERS
“Bradley has done well. I remember I met him when he was still an assistant coach for Red Bull, and we had a chat. It’s amazing to see what he has accomplished. I think he has adjusted and adapted to MLS.
“I like the fact that he had a South African in St Louis City FC. He had [Njabulo] Blom, and now he has [Olwethu] Makhanya at Philadelphia, which is always good because it’s always good as a South African player to go somewhere where there is a coach that speaks your language, that knows your culture.”
