Ex-Spurs star finally set for AmaZulu debut

Former Cape Town Spurs midfielder Liam Bern could at last make his debut for AmaZulu FC this weekend when Arthur Zwane‘s side host Siwelele FC at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

The 22-year-old joined Usuthu from the ABC Motsepe side before the start of this season. His move to KwaZulu-Natal was marked by a boardroom battle between Spurs and AmaZulu, which delayed his competitive debut for his new club.

The Urban Warriors contested his transfer to AmaZulu as a free agent, a similar situation that also affected the Kaizer Chiefs duo of Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.

However, he has now been cleared by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber to feature in Usuthu’s official matches.

“Liam Bern will be eligible for team selection when we take on  Siwelele FC  this Saturday, 22 November,” the club said in a statement.

It is to be seen if Usuthu coach Zwane will hand Bern his debut with a start against Siwelele or the player will come on from the bench. The likes of Bongani Zungu, Mlondi Mbanjwa and Siyanda Hlangabeza are some of the other players Bern would be competing for game time, presenting a stiff task for the ex-Urban Warriors star.

The Cape Town-born midfielder could make his maiden appearance for AmaZulu at a time the club is sixth on the PSL table.

Zwane’s side is still within a chance of a top-two finish this season with 19 Betway Premiership games remaining for them. They also have the Nedbank Cup to play for, an opportunity for Bern and his teammates to end the term with some silverware.

Bern’s availability comes as Usuthu have also added former Richards Bay midfielder Langelihle Mhlongo to their squad. Mhlongo could also feature against Siwelele and his presence could add depth in the middle of the park for Zwane.
