TERANGA LIONS MAUL KENYA TO DENT MCCARTHY’S IMAGE
After a respectable coaching career that saw him being a forwards coach at Manchester United, Tuesday’s result could be a huge dent to McCarthy’s reputation. The humiliation by Senegal came four days after the Harambee Stars were edged 1-0 by Equatorial Guinea in another international friendly match in Turkey.
The Bafana Bafana legend entered history books by being in charge of the fourth biggest defeat the East Africans have ever suffered. Kenya’s worst record was the 13-1 thumping by neighbours Uganda in 1932, following the 13-2 thrashing by Ghana on Independence Day in 1965.
Also worse than the result McCarthy presided over was the 1978 demolition by Zambia. The former FC Porto and West Ham striker will now be under pressure to pick himself up in Kenya’s next games to clean his image.
In the 15 games he has been in charge of the Harambee Stars, McCarthy has managed six wins, three draws and six defeats.
