Stellenbosch FC goalkeeper Sage Stephens has opened up about his chances of making it to the Bafana Bafana AFCON squad.

The AFCON tournament is due to be held in Morocco from 21 December and will end on 18 January 2026.

Stephens was first named in Hugo Broos’ squad at the age of 33 in November last year for the AFCON qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.

Stephens went on to make his debut for Bafana, coming on in the second half to replace captain Ronwen Williams in their 3-0 victory over South Sudan.

This came after Stephens played a significant role in helping Stellies secure a third-place finish in the SA top flight to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup and win their first-ever trophy โ€“ the 2023/24 Carling Knockout Cup.

However, in the current campaign, Stephens, who also serves as Stellies captain, has played 19 games across all competitions.

‘IF IT DOESN’T HAPPEN, I’M OKAY WITH IT’: SAGE STEPHENS

Stephens expressed that he will do everything possible to perform at his best to win Broos’ heart, but he also acknowledges that he will be fine if the call up doesn’t happen.

“The only thing I can do is focus on myself and my performances, and make sure that I put in the best performances I can for Stellenbosch FC,” said Stephens.

“So, if that puts my name on the Bafana squad list, so be it; if it doesn’t happen, I’m okay with it.

“The only thing I can do is make sure I do my best and ensure I’m in a position that is physically, professionally, and experientially ready. In case that opportunity arises, I will be prepared for it.”
