Vilakazi outlines Chippa’s January transfer window plans

Chippa United head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has outlined the club’s approach to the 2026 January transfer window to continue the fight to survive relegation.

The former Richards Bay FC mentor has a big task to help Chippa survive relegation after having a dismal start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Chippa United is languishing at the bottom of the league table after only managing to collect seven points in 13 matches. They won one match, drew four, and suffered eight defeats.

The Gqeberha-based side finds itself in an early fight to avoid relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship and save its top-flight status.

After a horrible run since the start of the campaign, United has made four coaching changes after having Sinethemba Badela, Musa Nyatama, and Luc Eymael in the hot seat before hiring Vusumuzi Vilakazi.

Speaking after their 2-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, Kanu has revealed that his side is not looking to sign more players in January, but they could release a few players.

“I’m not worried about the window. When I took the assignment, I knew what I was doing in terms of understanding the players,” Vilakazi said. “Fortunately, half of the team here at Chippa, I’ve worked with them before, so I’m confident enough with the squad that we have, we can still survive.

“Obviously, when we’re talking about next season and setting targets, that will be a different story, so that we don’t fight relegation. But for now, I’m still happy and comfortable with the players we have.

“Maybe the window might be there for us to release a few players, but I’m not concerned about signing players, getting experienced players, or something like that.”
