Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen has shared his thoughts on his chances of making it to the Bafana Bafana’s AFCON final squad. The Amakhosi goalkeeper is among the Bafana preliminary 54-member squad, which was announced on 24 November 2025.
Coach Hugo Broos is expected to trim his squad to the final 23 players on Monday, 1 December, at SABC Studios in Auckland Park.
The AFCON tournament is scheduled to be held in Morocco from 21 December to 18 January 2026.
Petersen started the 2025/26 season on a high note, having kept five consecutive clean sheets for the Soweto giants. Overall, he has featured in 16 games across all competitions for Chiefs this campaign and has kept nine clean sheets.
Given his impressive displays for the Glamour Boys, South African football fanatics are calling for his name to be included in the Bafana squad.
Petersen is not the only player selected from Chiefs in the Bafana preliminary squad. Bradley Cross, Mduduzi Shabalala and Thabiso Monyane have also made the cut to Broos’ preliminary squad.

WHAT BRANDON PETERSEN SAID ABOUT SECURING A SPOT IN BAFANA AFCON SQUAD
Petersen expressed that he already feels honoured to be in the preliminary squad, and that the decision lies with Coach Broos as to whether he will select him.
“I think, for me, my focus is always on club football. So, my focus is here, and I do well at the team level,” said Petersen.
“At the end of the day, it is the coach’s decision. For me, being in the preliminary squad is an honour and a privilege.
“I know that if I get selected, it will be great for me, but my focus is on club football, and the rest will take care of itself.”
