Durban City FC chairman Farook Kadodia has explained why the club decided to cut ties with veteran coach Gavin Hunt.

The club confirmed the news on Monday night, just a day after FARPost broke the story that the veteran football mentor is headed for the exit door from the newly promoted Betway Premiership side.

In the meantime, assistant coach Pitso Dlada will take over the reins at the club on an interim basis. His first assignment will be against Orbit College FC on Wednesday, 3 December, in a league encounter away from home.

Durban City disclosed that the decision to part ways with Hunt followed a review of the footballing strategy conducted by the club’s board of directors, which concluded that a different strategy is needed to fulfil the team’s goals.

“This was a mutual decision, taken with the club’s best interests at heart. I’d like to thank Gavin personally for his hard work and dedication. We all wish him well for the future,” said Kadodia.

“It is now the right time for change. We look to build a competitive side with the future in mind.”

The side also added that they will use the AFCON break to look for a new coach. The new gaffer will then take over at the club on a permanent basis.

“The club will utilise the upcoming break during the Africa Cup of Nations to conduct its appointment process for a permanent successor. This timeline is designed to allow the new head coach a clear period to prepare the squad for the second half of the season,” reads the club’s statement.

As things stand, the KwaZulu-Natal side is placed eighth on the Betway Premiership log standings. They have accumulated 19 points from 14 outings.
