Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has questioned the sacking of veteran mentor Gavin Hunt by city rivals Durban City FC. City officially announced Hunt’s departure on Monday following their 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday. As per the club’s official statement, Hunt left on a ‘mutual agreement’ with the club.
Hunt served for just over five months, participating in two competitions. He guided the Durban team in 14 league fixtures, achieving five wins, four draws, and five losses.
In addition, Hunt led the club formerly known as Maritzburg United to the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals. They were subsequently knocked out by Richards Bay FC in October.
Mngqithi expressed shock at the decision, while commending Hunt for his achievements with the club. “I think Gavin, in my opinion, was still doing well at Durban City, and he introduced a lot of youngsters who are doing well and played very well in the NFD. Their position on the log for a team that is coming from the NFD is very good,” said Mngqithi

Nevertheless, a close source informed FARPost that the team’s football results did not entirely influence Hunt’s departure.
The publication learned that Hunt’s ideas and vision for the club conflicted with management’s. This ultimately led the club to part ways with the coach.
Mngqithi further questioned the club’s vision for the future. He specifically probed whether they seek to adopt an exciting brand of football or a results-driven approach.
“I wonder what’s going to happen there after this because chances are that if they are not excited with what he was doing, then the question is, do they want to be progressive and play expansive, or do they want someone who is going to give them better percentages of getting into the box?” he asked.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach closed off by maintaining that his opinions are purely a reflection of the PSL’s developments, in respect of a question posed by the press.
“But I am not judging any team, I am just giving you my view of how I see the PSL this season,’ he concluded.
