Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has admitted that the team’s start in the ABC Motsepe League has fallen short of expectations but welcomes the early-season wake-up call.
The club known as the Urban Warriors officially began a new chapter in the third tier after suffering two successive relegations, dropping out of the Betway Premiership and then the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.
Results on the pitch have reflected a team still finding its feet. In three outings, Spurs opened with a 3-1 home win over defending champions Zizwe United, followed by a 2-0 away defeat to Young Bafana and a 1-1 home draw against Ubuntu FC.
ALEXI EFSTATHIOU: ‘WE HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO SORT THE PROBLEMS’
Speaking after the mixed bag of results, Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou admitted the start had not gone exactly to plan but stressed that perspective was needed at this stage of the campaign.
“It was not the results we targeted, but we are glad this has happened now, early in the season,” Efstathiou told FARPost.
“We have enough time and opportunity to sort out whatever needs to be sorted out on and off the field so that we can achieve our goal at the end of the season.

“I mean, everyone expects to win every game, but it’s not possible. We will try to do that, but you will lose one here and there.”
Efstathiou also confirmed that expectations at the club remain high despite the difficult take-off.
“Yes, we have the same mandate as all the other clubs,” the Spurs CEO said when asked about their objectives for the season. “To win the title.”
On the ABC Motsepe League, he said: “I must say the administration side was good, the guys did the registrations on MY SAFA, all went well. Well done to SAFA, both Western Cape and Cape Town, for that.
“Obviously, there are other issues that need to be sorted out. They have nothing to do with us. Otherwise, no complaints. The referees, not much complaints. Some fields are not in the best condition, but that is also expected in this league,” he concluded.
Coming up next for the Parow-based club is a trip to Seaside Spurs on Friday at the Ocean View Sports Complex, kick-off is at 19:30.
